                                                                     Thursday's Mission

All of the youth rotated in and out of classrooms and the library for our beautification  and reorganization project.

Michael learns the art of play from his class in between reading and math lessons.

Sometimes you just need a hug, and Elena is usually there when this happens.
 Another delicious lunch at school.
Ms. Tonya's kindergarten class plays after exams.
The sewing shop at school where these ladies make the school uniforms and other items for sale to benefit the school.

School girls' uniform

We removed all the books and painted the shelves. After pics coming soon.
Tomas and Michael go to Mr. Freddy's workshop to get needed supplies for our library beautification project.

Fun on the beach

We ended our evening with reflections and prayers. There's no doubt that God is in Belize. We see the evidence constantly here, despite the great needs people have in San Mateo. We strive to be God's hands and feet in motion with our service and love.

Wednesday's Mission

Wednesday's Mission

Our morning commute to work.
First stop- the bakery. We wish you could taste the delicious handmade pastries we are enjoying every morning.

We worked with classes and individual students on their writing. First grader, Jose, is making great progress in learning how to write sentences.

Our work in the library continues as we remove books from shelves so we can start our painting project.
Charlie paints columns in the library.
Shawn, our project manager.

Safety first. Anna demonstrates how to paint and still breathe.

The calm before the storm with the handprint project.
Holy Cross students LOVED lending a hand to our banner.

The finished product. "The Power in Love"--name that Bishop!

Dozens (hundreds?) of students waited to make their mark on our banner.

Taking in the sun and the sea.

Fresh papusas (cornmeal fritters with yummy fillings)

Red Fanta, a local favourite.

DandE's ice cream. It's as good as all those St. Lukers who've been to Belize told us.

We shared our evening reflections and gratitudes on the dock with the moon above us, under the watchful eyes of our new dog friends, Larry and Gabe. The night sky, the ocean, faithful friends, dogs, and God--it was a good day for a good day, and we are grateful.

Day 2 in Belize we walked to the local bakery on our way to Holy Cross School.
Sweet and savory pastries were a welcome start to the day.

The librarian, Estrella, led us on a walking tour of  the community San Mateo with the group (including Mateo-- see what we did there?).

                                                    Mateo assisted students with exams.
We watched a video in the computer lab about the history of Holy Cross.
The new dental clinic at the school.
                                                       Michael at the swing set.

Tomas spent hours organizing books in the library.
One of the many dogs wandering the beach we befriended.
Charlie the fearless lizard catcher. This is one of his new reptile friends.
                                                                  Walking to dinner.
Dinner at Elvi's. We tried new and local foods--octopus, mussels, pork pabil, and crab.

A lesson from the Holy Cross computer lab to live by.

Youth Belize Mission Trip 2018

We arrived! Our morning started at 5:40am at RDU. Our flight from Fort Lauderdale arrived in Belize  City where we met our old friend Phillip who has served as the taxi driver for many St. Luke’s groups over the years. Arianie met us at the water taxi port, where we presented her with a prayer shawl and scholarship on St. Luke’s behalf. After a 90 minute water taxi ride we made it to San Pedro. We got acclimated to our surroundings and the house on the beach. Looking forward to our work at Holy Cross School tomorrow.
